OBIT: (Spencer, South Dakota)

JOHN SYLVESTER SMITH
John Salvester Smith was born in Pennsylvania, November 23, 1857 and departed this life November 9, 1937, aged 79 years, 11 months and 11 days. He had been in unusually good health this fall until Saturday evening he became suddenly ill. He was immediately rushed to the Methodist hospital at Mitchell where he underwent a serious operation, the shock of which was too severe for his advanced age.
He united with the Methodist church in early manhood.
He leaves to mourn his departure, his aged wife, three daughters, Mrs. Nellie Muters of Spencer, Mrs. Earl Hoffman, of Farmer and Mrs. Carl Rasmussen of Lamberton, Minn. and three sons. Clifford of Gilmore City, Iowa, Loren of Des Moines, Iowa and John of Kansas City, Mo. and 21 grandchildren, also one brother and three sisters, also a host of friends.
Mr. Smith moved with his family from Iowa some 20 years ago to Spencer, S. D. where he and his wife had lived until his death.
He was a very industrious man always finding something to do either for himself or for some one else. He was a man of exceptional character and good habits. He was a kind, generous and thoughtful husband and father and will be greatly missed in his family circle.
